About Course
Africa faces a significant infrastructure financing gap, with annual demand estimated at USD 130–170 billion and a shortfall of USD 67.6–107.5 billion. Traditional funding sources, such as government support, donor funding, and foreign direct investments, are increasingly unreliable, making project finance an essential tool for funding large-scale infrastructure projects.
Project finance, commonly used in energy, telecommunications, and transportation, relies on a project’s cash flow for debt repayment, with assets serving as collateral. This approach minimizes investment risks, raises low-cost finance, and avoids impacting sponsors’ balance sheets by utilizing a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).
Despite its benefits, project finance is complex, requiring extensive due diligence, stakeholder agreements, and the careful definition of roles and obligations, which can make the arrangement process time-consuming.
